Shadows

Often we
learn
too late in life
where the
important
work
gets done.
      We trace
    dark shapes
    where the light
    would be
    if only our
    form
    could match
    our spirit.

Shadows know
what we desire
what we could have

if only
we had not been.

The Self

I'm fascinated by the inherent paradox/contradiction of self portraits.

This is how we see ourselves at the precise moment we're in a blind spot, with no access to the viewfinder.

So self portraits are really all about anticipation, expectation, and... history.

The baggage we carry competes with the ideal we seek, or the "reality" we resign ourselves to.

Another way of looking at it/us/ourselves: what is it about ourselves we need to freeze to see? What have we so well hidden that we need to steal light in order to reveal?

How much do we really reveal, and how much do we hide?

Finally: unless we model all the time, we mostly know our mirror selves. That face we shave or apply make-up to. A self portrait wants to show us that other face as if in real time. Photos taken by others won't do; they are pictures of what others have seen, but not of what we have/could/desire to see ourselves.

A self portrait is a time machine. When we see our own self portrait, we travel back in time to the moment the picture was taken, but instead of looking at the camera from the pose, we're looking at our posed selves through the viewfinder.

A self portrait is a lie.

A lie that tells the truth?

In a sense, anyone who takes a self portrait is a liar. She wants us to believe that she's captured some special insight into her ...

Gift Exchange

Journal Entry: Sun Nov 15, 2009, 9:50 PM

~webofdreams89, a talented writer and photographer from the midwest, has devised a wonderful idea for the close of the year: a gift exchange for deviants. Check out her journal entry here explaining how to participate: [link]

This doesn't have to connote any kind of holiday celebration, if you're not into that. It's just cool to think of others as the year draws down... and who doesn't need a little bit of goodwill every now & then?

A nightingale upon a cedar green
Under the chamber wall there as she lay,
Full loudè sang against the moonè sheen,
Paraunter, in his birdè's wise, a lay
Of love, that made her heartè fresh and gay;
That hearkened she so long in good intent
Till at the last the deadè sleep her hent.

And as she slept, anon right then she mett
How that an eagle, feathered white as bone,
Under her breast his longè clawès set,
And out her heart he rent, and that anon;
And did his heart into her breast to gon.
Of which she nought agroos, ne nothing smart,
And forth he flew, with heartè left for heart.
